Lincoln’s golden girl in the pool By Gordon Findlater LINCOLN’S HANNAH Bates is a national champion after winning her first open swimming title at the NZ Short Course Championships in Auckland. Bates, 17, finished the five-day event with a gold medal in the open 400m individual medley
and a bronze medal in the open 100m individual medley. “I didn’t think I was going to come up here and win an open title, so to do it was pretty amazing,” said Hannah. She went into Friday’s 400m individual medley final with confidence after setting the fastest qualifying time. She showed
no signs of cracking under pressure of the big stage, shaving two and a half seconds off her previous best time in the event to win in 4min 48.92sec, more than two seconds ahead of her nearest rival. It was a busy week for Bates, who competed in 17 individual races and three team relays. She
also won a gold, four silver and two bronze medals in the 17-18 year age category. Bates’ preparation for the championships was not ideal. Six weeks ago she came down with a stomach bug which forced her to miss a week of training. •Turn to page 24
By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LINCOLN’S CAR parking issues have taken another twist with painted reserved signs outside a line of shops now having to be removed. The signs on car parks outside an Indian restaurant, Subway, hairdresser, dairy and coffee shop read ‘Reserved shops 5 Robert St’ were put in 12 days ago. But the district council says the signs cannot stay as the shops do not have exclusive use of the car parks, which have 120min restricted parking signs on them. Building owner Shaun Stockman told the Selwyn Times he had put in the signs as a response to clamping and tow away signs put up by the Black Door Bar and Eatery on the other side of Robert St in June. He said the Black Door’s patrons were taking up the car parks outside the shops. Those signs were removed several weeks ago. The district council ruled the Black Door did not have exclusive rights on the parks outside its premises. •Turn to page 7

IT’S BEEN a great week for some of the district’s young sporting stars. On page 1 today, we highlight Lincoln swimmer Hannah Bates, who is now a national champion. The 17-year-old is one of the country’s most promising swimmers, and she shaved two and a half seconds off her best time. Lincoln High’s Brooke Whitman (page 23) has made the under-18 national ice hockey team. She’s only 14 and will be part of a side that will travel to Kuala Lumpur in March to compete in the IIHF ice hockey women’s challenge cup Asia tournament. And on page 24, Prebbleton motor racing driver Jack Milligan made it onto the podium at Mount Panorama at the weekend. He is starting to make a name for himself in the class he races in. – Barry Clarke

Hard-up Lincoln Uni paid out $72,000 to recruit boss

By Bridget Rutherford A CASH-STRAPPED Lincoln University spent more than $70,000 recruiting its new vicechancellor, it can be revealed. The university paid out $72,431 to find and hire vicechancellor Robin Pollard from England, who was appointed in January last year while the institution was facing a $5 million deficit. Lincoln University refused to release the cost when asked in September last year, citing commercial sensitivity. That ruling Robin Pollard was appealed to the Ombudsman and Lincoln has now released the figure. Chancellor Steve Smith said yesterday Lincoln was not hiding Prof Pollard’s recruitment figure last year. However, the university did release the $86,540 cost of recruiting previous vicechancellor Andy West, who resigned in 2015 amid concerns

All released the costs last year. Tertiary Education Union Lincoln University organiser Jo McLean said the recruitment cost was “not Andy West ideal”, but she did not know what the market rate was. “One would have hoped they would have done it in a financially-prudent way taking into account the financial situation.” Dr West resigned two years short of his five-year contract amid concerns he spent too much on consultants. Lincoln spent $146,971 on legal fees and a “last day of duty” payment to Dr West to end his time there.

News Freedom campers have negative By Georgia O’Connor-Harding LITTER, DEFECATING, overcrowding, fire lighting and antisocial behaviour are key issues identified as negative impacts freedom camping are having on the district. The issues have been identified as part of a report exposing the impacts freedom camping has on the district. Observations into the environmental impacts of freedom camping were carried out at Chamberlains Ford and Whitecliffs Domain. It found high amounts of litter, especially at Chamberlains Ford with rubbish varying from supermarket bags to toilet paper with plastic being the most common type of litter. Large amounts were found behind the Chamberlains Ford’s toilet block. But research findings suggested freedom campers were either not aware of the litter issues and it was identified it needed to be addressed. High volumes of freedom camping can be attributed to the excessive amounts of litter. Mayor Sam Broughton said the issues identified in the report were the reason freedom

camping was getting a bad name. But he said these problems were generally caused by a minority of campers. Mr Broughton said the district council had done a lot to support freedom camping and there are signs and infrastructure in place so people can dispose responsibly. He said the district council
recently asked for further funding to improve toilet facilities in Selwyn. The report showed high numbers with records of visitor numbers between November and March showing 4504 vehicles parked at Chamberlains Ford equating to about 125 vehicles a night. At Coes Ford 2327 were recorded over the same period.
The report stated freedom camping is no longer a seasonal activity but occurs throughout the year. Other findings were incidents of fires lit at Lakeside Domain and Coes Ford, freedom campers defecating in grass reserves and campsites and reports of antisocial behaviour from police and residents. Noticeable amounts of tissue
and toilet paper were found at Chamberlains Ford and Whitecliffs Domain, particularly in areas furthest away from toilet facilities. The report said visitors said there are frequent quests to the toilets. Anti-social behaviour is most common at Chamberlains Ford and Coes Ford. Examples include assaults, dogs not on leads, drunken behaviour, excessive noise and inappropriate use of motor-cycles, four-wheeldrive vehicles and quad-bikes. Concern was also raised in the report from visitors interviewed about the state of the Selwyn’s rivers. About 15 per cent of visitors at Chamberlains Ford, Coes Ford and Whitecliffs commented on the state of the rivers without being asked. The report was compiled over last year’s Christmas holiday period and released to the public by the district council last week. It was first presented to the district council as part of an internal briefing to its councillors. Selwyn Times reported it would not be released because district council staff were discussing the results with neighbouring councils.

Other findings: •Observations at Chamberlains Ford and Whitecliffs yielded a high incidence of litter, especially plastics, and especially at Chamberlains Ford; the campsite with the heaviest concentration of visitors and the highest proportion of international visitors. •Chamberlains Ford was also rated highly by visitors for cleanliness/tidiness. These insights either suggest that visitors are not noticing the amount of litter or feel ambivalent towards it. •Two per cent of respondents who completed the visitor survey said they used nature/waterways as a toilet – this figure might have been under reported by the respondents; •The term ‘freedom camper’ has been hijacked, and is synonymous with young international (not domestic) visitors who typically tour the country in a non-self-contained van that they use to sleep in. •Ratepayers have a tendency to negatively stereotype the young international tourists who travel the country in non-self-contained vehicles, and view them as bludgers. •Ratepayers view the district council as proactively managing the situation locally by largely keeping freedom campers contained to the designated areas. Interestingly, ratepayers were largely unaware of the large amounts of litter currently at Chamberlains Ford. •Strong concerns were raised about the Te Araroa walkers defecating in the wild due to a lack of toilet facilities, the loss of traditional rights for fishermen to freedom camp at Lake Coleridge, Lake Selfe and Ryton Bay, and road safety issues at Chamberlains Ford.

However, the district council’s environmental services manager Tim Harris said the district council never gave permission for the signage. The district council’s position is that no public car park can be reserved for private or individual retail outlets use without prior agreement with it, he said. Said Mr Stockman: “I have since had a discussion with the district council and have agreed in the interest of everybody to remove them,” he said.
In the interim Mr Stockman was unaware the Black Door had removed its clamping and tow away signs. Mr Stockman said he reserved the right to put signage back in again if any other business in the area decide to in the future. In a bid to address car parking issues in the area, the district council purchased a property in 16 William St in July for offstreet parking. Mr Stockman said it is “absolutely crazy” to remove car parks on Gerald St for a cycleway. “You will kill jobs, kill livelihoods, take the lifeblood out of the place and you will ruin it, absolutely ruin it,” he said. A cyclist himself, Mr Stockman said he would rather cycle an alternative route such as North Belt than through the town centre.

Dogs return to libraries THE DISTRICT council libraries programme for term four is now open for bookings at the Leeston and Rolleston libraries. The programme encourages children to read to a friendly dog, helping them gain greater confidence reading aloud, as well as developing literacy. Libraries manager Vicki Carlyon said feedback on the programme has been positive. “The volunteer dog owners selected by the Selwyn Dog Training Club have also enjoyed contributing to children’s reading progress and seeing the enjoyment both dogs and children take from their interactions.” Parent Catherine Nicol says the programme has encouraged her son Toby to read. “He won’t read at home, but says it’s fun patting the dogs”. The dogs have been carefully selected and are monitored by their handler. The free 15min sessions will continue to be available at Leeston and Rolleston on a fortnightly basis, with most taking place on the mobile library bus. Win a trip to the Melbourne Cup FLEMINGTON subdivision at Lincoln is named after one of the most famous racecourses in the world. So, to cap a good year, Lincoln’s version has decided to offer two lucky people the opportunity to visit Melbourne’s equivalent on November 7 to watch the famous race. Flemington developer Shane Kennedy, as well as a successful horse trainer, said the subdivision at Lincoln had strong demand this year, so as a way of thanks had decided to run a competition for two people to see this year’s Melbourne Cup. “We have organised flights from Christchurch leaving on the Monday and returning on the Wednesday, two nights’ accommodation and access to a marquee located at the heart of Flemington Racecourse on the big day. There’s also a buffet lunch and refreshments included. “Entries are from our show home village and we intend to draw the lucky name out later in October to give them plenty of time to prepare,” he said.

Bid to overcome sporting facility zoning snag By Emily O’Connell A ROAD block, which is in the way of a Russian businessman’s plan to expand his Yaldhurst sporting facility, might be cleared today. Canterbury Sports Ltd director Slava Meyn, who moved to Christchurch in 2009, built the Yaldhurst Football Academy two years ago. He is now in the process of planning a bigger complex on the 20ha block of land, which would include a gymnastics indoor stadium, swimming pool, sport courts, and weights area. But the land he wants to develop is zoned Open Space Community Park under the district plan, which does not allow for buildings larger than 1000 sq m. Mr Meyn wants the zoning to be changed to Open Space Metropolitan Facilities Zone, so he can progress the development as planned. Because Mr Meyn’s plans do not comply, the project could be delayed by up to five years with resource and building consent processes. City council staff have been looking into how it could change

the zoning to allow the expansion to go ahead. They decided the best way to do so was through the Greater Christchurch Regeneration Act. Today, the city council’s regulatory performance committee will decide whether to ask staff to investigate a way of doing so through the Act, and to report back to city councillors. It would require working with Regenerate Christchurch and the department of prime minister and Cabinet. It comes just as McDonald’s has applied for resource consent to the city council to build a new restaurant and drive through opposite the sporting facility. The idea to speed up the
zone-changing process has been supported by Sport Canterbury, Christchurch Netball Centre, Canterbury Basketball Association, Mainland Football, Canterbury Water Polo, Southern Districts Football Club, ChristchurchNZ, and Apollo Projects – Aquatic and Sporting Facilities, who all wrote to the city council asking it to help change the zoning. Wigram MP Megan Woods and Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce chief executive Peter Townsend have also written in support of using the act to do so. Dr Woods said it has the potential to be a really good asset for western Christchurch but the community must be involved. “I think what we absolutely have to do is make sure that we get the views of the community in the process as well,” she said. The existing football facility has two full size artificial football pitches, four artificial mini-pitches, a full-size natural turf pitch, clubroom facilities, café, administrative offices, grandstand seating for about 1000 people.

CLEAR OUT: Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora has successfully opened to the sea. It was cut open on Sunday, October 1. A media spokeswoman said the cut has developed well. The cut survived the first high tide and is now about 35m wide. It was recorded on September 22 the lake level reading was 0.99m, a calm average. The lake was last opened in July, lasting 38 days. Hugh Paterson
Retired vicar’s work in churches, Hugh Paterson, 83, has spent most of his life in Sheffield, working to help the community – both in the church and in the garden. He spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding How long have you lived in Sheffield for? I have lived here for 50 years. For 35 years I was the vicar of the Parish of Malvern. Then I retired and we bought the house and the parish bought a new vicarage down in Darfield. I take an occasional service at St Ambrose but not regularly. The parish consists of a number of churches. One at Courtenay, Kirwee, Darfield, Sheffield, Springfield and Arthur’s Pass. Is St Ambrose a significant building to Sheffield? Yes it is. It was built in the mid fifties. Over the years we have landscaped it and planted trees around it. It is a fairly attractive site. I understand you are heavily involved with planting projects and beautifying the township? Yes, I help do it. The community does it. We planted every year for the last 10 to 12 years. We have planted between 1000-2000 daffodils around the Sheffield-Waddington area each
year. They don’t go very far. We like daffodils. They are easy to plant, and not a lot of trouble. As long as we can persuade Sicon not to have them mowed, they will continue flowering for a long time. They are along the railway line and we have the TranzAlpine going through so we try to make the place look attractive. You have been in Sheffield for a long time. What is so special about the place? We have glorious views of the mountains. A friend of mine who has spent time in the Himalayas has always maintained Sheffield has a better view of the mountains than he ever got in the Himalayas, because he was always up against them too close. Here you get the Canterbury Plains, and then you get to look into the mountains. It is a small pleasant, friendly place. It has a stimulating climate, although I wouldn’t say it is easy to live with. We get wind, nor-westers, rain and snow, so it is always varied. You have to be careful

I understand you have been involved in planting projects in Sheffield for the upcoming commemorations for the Battle of Passchendaele? We have done planting projects for the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, at the cenotaph. We have commemorated the beginning of World War 1, the 100th anniversary of Anzac Day and the 100th an-
niversary of the Battle of the Somme. This Thursday we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele. And that consists of placing a cross with details of the battle on it and planting a Gallipoli oak at the cenotaph. The Gallipoli oaks come from the oak tree at the Bridge of Remembrance in Christchurch. Douglas Deans, of the original Deans family who fought at Gallipoli, sent
acorns from the battle to his mother. She planted them and one was planted at the Bridge of Remembrance. Our family has collected acorns from there and grown them on our private gardens. Sheffield Contributing School will attend. They will sing for us and their kapa haka group will be present. Their community group will participate and we will have a cup of tea back at the school.

gardens and to honour soldiers Are you planning to plant a tree for each soldier? What we will do on Armistice Day, November 11 next year, we intend to plant a row of Gallipoli oaks at the cenotaph. One for each of the names of those killed during World War 1. That is 20 names, 20 oak trees with 20 crosses next to them, with their name and ranking and so forth. Do you have any connections to the war? Not from Sheffield, I do from my hometown in Taranaki. My father, served in the World War 1 and two uncles.One of who was killed. You have done a lot of work to beautify the area? Are there any projects we have missed? We are always improving the trees in the local reserve. We have got a planting programme and we keep working on that one. You are on the Sheffield township committee? Any issues in need of addressing? One of the key issues is getting the earthquake repairs getting completed on the Sheffield Hall. We try keep the place attractive. Tell me about your seed business you used to run? For many years my late wife Ena and I ran our little business which collected seeds of pine

plants from the mountains. We used to sell them all around the world. They went everywhere. The funds from that were used to help the parish. Mainly Europe, the western side of America and sometimes Australia. They like these extraordinary New Zealand plants. It is some years now since we stopped doing it. It would now be difficult because of all the
restrictions put on customs and biosecurity. We did it from 1980 to about 2000. The name of the business was Southern Seeds, and it was based in Sheffield. Tell me about your wife, she was obviously interested in gardening as well. Yes, she was, but she was a professional botanist. We met at Canterbury University long ago. I
was doing my theological studies. Did you always want to become a reverend? I don’t know about always, but it was something I decided on when I was at university. I first attended university in Dunedin. Then I came up to Christchurch, to the theological college, and completed a degree here in Canterbury. I was ordained in 1960

and my wife and I were married in 1961. Those days we lived in Timaru. We moved to Hokitika and then we came to Sheffield. We got stuck in Sheffield. In your role as reverend did you go on any pilgrimages? No, I am not a travelling man. I have never owned a passport. I am not particularly interested in travelling. What do you see in the future for churches out Malvern way? They will always be here. They play a very important part in the community. They are one of several things that bring the community together, like the schools and the sports clubs. Do you have any children? I have three children. My eldest lives out here with me. My second child lives with his wife in Darfield and my youngest daughter lives in Springfield. They are all nearby – I am very lucky. The eldest one works for Colombo St Countdown, my second is a paramedic with St John and the youngest works in the library at Canterbury University. Do you have any other hobbies or interests? My main hobbies are gardening and reading. I just finished a book on the Battle of Passchendaele.

Ellesmere students’ cultural, sporting ELLESMERE COLLEGE celebrated the success of its many talented students at its annual Sporting and Cultural Awards Ceremony last Wednesday. The evening began with a performance of the school’s kapa haka group and was presented by Mark Walton, a clarinettist, saxophonist, composer, arranger and musical educator. The school’s head of arts and music and organiser Alison Wakelin said Mr Walton had an international reputation and it was an honour to have him officiate and play his clarinet. The evening concluded with supper provided by the school’s basketball team as a fundraiser for their forthcoming trip to the United States.

Entranceway sweeping will be occurring at Shands Road, Springston Rolleston Road and Waterbridge Way. Upgrade work including kerb and channel and seal widening is being done by the developer on the east side of Springston Rolleston Road south of Lowes Road. Traffic controls will be operating at all sites. Stabilised seal repairs are occurring on Springston Rolleston Road. Digout repairs will be carried out on Newtons Road, Curve Road and Ellesmere Junction Road. Please stop on request at these sites. Footpath repairs will be occurring on Heathridge Place in Lincoln, the footpath will be closed during these works.

Council supports
Rolleston Men’s Shed Selwyn District Council and the Rolleston Men’s Shed have formalised their partnership by signing the lease on the community group’s site at Dynes Road. Selwyn Mayor Sam Broughton says the Council is looking forward to working closely with the group and supporting them in their community-focused projects. Rolleston Men’s Shed Chairman Stephen Rushton says they wouldn’t be where they are today without the help from the Council. “We are very grateful to the Council for providing the land, funding and technical support to help us get this idea off the ground. The staff have been so friendly and easy to work with,” he says. Since opening three years ago the Rolleston Men’s Shed has worked on numerous projects to benefit Rolleston and the wider community in Selwyn, including repairing the Rotary Club’s worn out lectern, creating the community book exchange box in Prebbleton, and designing, building and assembling a workshop for Rolleston Playcentre for children to play in. The Shed welcomes all who have an interest in technical ‘things’, such as doing projects around the Selwyn district, doing personal projects or simply fixing things. The Shed is a very social group, and each day starts with a cup of coffee or tea with other members.
A one-way system is in place between the intersection of Waterholes Road and Hamptons Road and 851 Waterholes Road. There will be no access to Main South Road from Waterholes Road. Traffic will be detoured via surrounding local roads. This is to allow for the remaining seal to be undertaken on the new temporary road at the intersection of Waterholes Road and Hamptons Road. This work will take up to three weeks and is weather dependent. As soon as the seal is completed the traffic management will be removed.
Advance notice: Jones Road part closure from 19 October Part of Jones Road, between Hoskyns Road and Weedons Ross Road, will be closed to traffic from 19 October for up to two months while major construction work is carried out. The road will be closed from Hoskyns Road to the recentlycompleted roundabout. There will be no access to Jones Road from Hoskyns Road. A detour will be available via Hoskyns Road and the new (unnamed) roads in the IPort subdivision (see map for details). The closure is required for the construction of a second roundabout servicing the IPort subdivision. The work is scheduled to be completed no later than 21 December.

After a positive response to the rollout of Paws for Reading, the Selwyn District Libraries programme is now open for bookings at Leeston and Rolleston libraries in term four. The programme encourages children to read to a friendly dog, helping them gain greater confidence reading aloud, as well as developing their reading literacy. Selwyn Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon says the programme has been very popular. “After running the Paws for Reading trial in term two and three this year we have been very pleased with the feedback we’ve received from children and their parents,” she says.

“The volunteer dog owners selected by the Selwyn Dog Training Club have also enjoyed contributing to children’s reading progress and seeing the enjoyment both dogs and children take from their interactions.” Stanley (aged six) and Edward Goh (aged five), are brothers who have both attended Paws for Reading sessions at Rolleston Library. Stanley says he likes reading to the dogs because “the dogs listen and like my stories”. Edward’s favourite books to read to the dogs are books about cats. The boys’ mother Heather Goh says the sessions are very beneficial to their reading confidence.

Your Local Views Readers respond to the Selwyn Times article on the district ranking as second in the country for most dangerous rural intersections. Readers were asked if they thought Selwyn’s intersections were dangerous Steve Young – In response to your question on the front page of today’s Selwyn Times, I would say no...and yes! I note that in the comments on the Kirwee intersection, most people draw attention to the fact that most drivers (most of whom are local) don’t stop at the stop signs. But I also note that there are no right-turn bays on any of the intersections on SH73 in 100km/h areas except the recentlycompleted one at Chatterton’s Rd. This is a clear breach of the national state highway standards. So normally, I would say it’s drivers that are dangerous, but I think I’m entitled to expect that state highways comply with national standards. Dave Saville – The one that I find really dangerous is where Halkett Rd joins the Main West Coast Rd (State Highway 73). I travel home from work each day between 5 and 6pm, when the traffic heading west is almost a solid stream of traffic. The traffic splits at this intersection, with between a quarter and a third of us turning off State Highway 73 onto Halkett Rd. NZTA re-did the intersection a year or so ago, so it now has a STOP sign for traffic heading east, in to Christchurch, which works well. But, to the great surprise of those of us who use the intersection daily, they failed to make a turning bay for vehicles heading west, that wish to turn on to Halkett Rd. Trying to turn off State Highway 73 while in the midst of a traffic stream of tired commuters going at 100 km/pph, is a scary and risky affair. To compound the problem, the road verge (shoulder) is not especially good at this point, but has to cope with vehicles thundering along it to avoid the queue of up to three – four vehicles waiting to turn onto Halkett Rd. I am

At the nearby, little used intersection, of Chattertons Rd with State Highway 73, NZTA have installed excellent turning bays for both east and westbound traffic. This has perhaps been paid for by newly consented quarries. We need to put pressure on NZTA to also do this at the Halkett, State Highway 73 intersection. I visited the district council’s (“Assets” section) last month to alert them to the problem. They said to talk to NZTA, which I have yet to do. Tony Rondel – There is nothing dangerous about Selwyn intersections the problem we have is incompetent drivers who do not STOP at stop signs, do not know what the rules are regards to keeping to correct lane when turning at intersections, too busy on their electronic devices to spot what is happening in time, travelling far too close to other vehicles. Readers respond to Selwyn Times’ article on the Prebbleton Community Swimming Pool closure Steph Calcroft – We would hate to see the pool get demol-
ished. We got the key last year for the first time. It was amazing to have a pool in Prebbleton where we can just pop down to after dinner on a lovely summer evening. It got the kids out from behind the ipads and televisions giving them much needed exercise. Also my children don’t go to Prebbleton School so for the first time since we have lived in Prebbleton they felt a since of belonging, being apart of the Prebbleton community, their community. It gave them to meet some children who live in their neighbourhood, as well as building their confidence in the water. Especially as the pool is very deep it lets them learn how to manage themselves in deep water in a very safe environment. The pool would be a great loss to the community. We certainly would miss it! Jeremy Calcroft – I am writing to express my concern about the closure of the Prebbleton School pool. I live in Prebbleton with my family. Last summer we had a key to the pool and used it, on average, three times a week over the pools season. It was great to have such easy access to the a great facility. Rather than having to go in the car we were able to bike or scooter down
in less than 10 minutes. Over the holidays the children loved having a fun activity and a a good reason to get out of the house. Our favourite time was to pop down to the pool for an hour or so after dinner. Our children are typical of other children today and are drawn to wards tablets and other devices so it was awesome to have an activity on hand that got them active. Also, with such regular dips in the pool the children’s growth in confidence and ability in the pool was really noticeable. Being in a smaller setting, the pool has a really friendly atmosphere and we found that often the same family were at the pool at the same time as us. We met some of our neighbours from further down the street that we had not spoken to before and this increased the sense of community. We would dearly miss the pool if it were to close. Although there are council pools available, due to the travelling time, we just would not go swimming as often. There must be an alternative site available for the school to build on so that Prebbleton can keep the pool. Anne Bouterey – I understand the pool hasn’t been used since 2005, however it seems to be a policy of MoE to continu-

To me it is a load of rubbish that the pool is too small for class teaching, unless of course a class of 40 plus is expected to be there altogether with one teacher. I would suggest just another excuse. As a young third former I actually taught lifesaving skills to older students at high school in a smallish pool (in cold water of course). The size is not the important thing, teaching children to stay afloat and get themselves along in the water is the beginning. Better swimming skills come once they have confidence and enjoy the water. We have a high rate of child drownings in the country which is unacceptable considering we are a narrow country surrounded by water. My wise mother, a non-swimmer, ensured we learnt to swim at an early age, the ministry and the district council need to be as sensible. It isn’t an option for some parents to transport their children to Rolleston, a closer community option needs to be available if lives are important. The MoE has an obligation to assist in this, the money would be well spent with fewer drownings or near drownings.

Sonja Ball – I have heard and now read about the Prebbleton Pool closure. Rather upset that it is happening as my family use this pool a lot . It’s local and nice and handy if you want to pop in for a quick dip or many throughout the day. The fee is really reasonable and it’s a nice place to be. With the addition of the life guards last year the general behaviour of the patrons has been great. And I am sure all the OSH requirements have been met. I am sure the rate payers would be interested and rather annoyed to know that the amount of money spent on the pool over the last few years is now effectively wasted. There has been new fencing, new and mended seating the exterior has been painted and the pool itself repaired and painted, there has been an alarm installed and a new entry system also the pump has had a few dollars spent on it as well. Not to mention the cost involved in getting a new water supply pipe installed so the pool and school can run separately. I am sure that the closure was in the wind before most of these costly upgrades were approved. I find it rather unusual that the school gets a new principal, and the pool gets closed. The school has not used the pool for many years now as the depth is a problem for children learning to swim. However

this could be fixed with the use of those submersible platforms and a swim teacher coming on site rather than shipping 80 odd children off site. Also teachers are not allowed to teach children to swim as they are not qualified swim instructors – which is why many school children are bussed to purpose built pools with qualified instructors to have swim lessons. Prebbleton is expanding at a very quick pace, the school is land locked. I am sure that the addition of a few more class rooms will help but at some point the size of Prebbleton will outgrow the schools capacity again – then what? It’s all very well bowling the pool to add more classrooms but what about the outdoor space that is required legally for each child at some point this will also be outgrown. Why not relocate the school now to a bigger site that will accommodate the amount of children that will be in the area. Surely the MoE have done the figures. We could then keep the community pool and turn the school site into a few more residential plots and/or another sports field. The kindy may also need to expand. This pool has been run by the community for the community for many years and has been well supported. Can we squeeze one more season out before demolition starts – do

we have a start date? It’s a shame that someone with a flick of a pen can take it all away. Shame also that the community has not been involved in this decision. Would love to see some more writing in the paper on local’s thoughts. I would like to hope you have a great response, but it may be a battle too big to take on for the community.

A reader responds to the Lincoln comedy show at the weekend Bob Lineham – On Saturday my wife and I attended the Live in Lincoln Comedy Show. We enjoy good comedy and wanted to support this local event which had been widely publicised. We were very disappointed with the predominance of foul language and lack of content other than almost total emphasis on sex. Whatever happened to genuine comedy with talented comedians who can make an audience laugh without the repetitive use of one particular offensive four-letter word through a show? I can tolerate the odd borderline joke but this performance was in very bad taste and I am very glad we did not invite others to attend with us. Can our top comedians not come up something better than that or this a reflection on the low state of society today?

Selwyn kids bumble School’s out, and children in Rolleston, Leeston, Lincoln, Templeton and Burnham have been taking part in the Busy Bumbles’ holiday programme. Serving up new courts THE FIRST ball has been served in celebration of the opening of three new tennis courts in Weedons. Weedons Tennis Club celebrated the opening of its three new courts recently with a formal gathering of tennis players, guests and community members. The tennis courts have been moved and realigned to allow for a larger cricket oval for the Weedons Cricket Club as part of the community pavilion redevelopment. The opening was held at Weedons Reserve with the event organised by the club’s secretary Julie Cockburn. The first serve was made by Stratton Construction owner Andrew Stratton, who with his team of workers constructed the tennis courts, fencing and volley board. It was attended by district councillor Jeff Bland, who spoke about the unique area and how the community can enjoy Weedons. Weedons Reserve Committee chairman Peter Holmes spoke about the hard work reserve members had put into the facility and the great facilities available for tennis, cricket and golf. Weedons Tennis Club chairman Alan Drewett spoke about the beginning of the club in 1910,

the continuation of junior tennis and the introduction of the president’s team six years ago. The cutting of the blue and green ribbons to open the new courts was performed by Weedons’ oldest resident and former tennis player Joy Curragh. The cutting of the cake, iced by Kirstie Hamilton, was performed by two junior club members – Laura Hamilton and Mitchell Cockburn. Mrs Cockburn said it was a relaxed environment. “A great afternoon was had by all,” she said.
Lincoln High girl in national ice hockey team By Andrew King LINCOLN HIGH’S Brooke Whitman has been selected in the under-18 women’s national ice hockey team. The 14-year-old is part of the team that will travel to Kuala Lumpur in March to compete in the IIHF ice hockey women’s challenge cup Asia tournament. They will face Thailand, Singapore and a Chinese Taipei team. She played a crucial role in the under-18 team last year that won the International Ice Hockey Federation Challenge Cup of Asia after going through the tournament undefeated. Brooke’s father, Howard, said she is a pure, clean player who

The tournament gives Asian countries that are not in the world championship programme, or that play in a lower division, a chance to compete. Other Canterbury players included in the side are Burnside High’s Phoebe Thompson, Alyssa Murphy and Katelyn Heyrick; St Andrew’s Ellie Dugdale; Marian College’s Millicent Smith and Shirley Boys’ High’s fill-in goalie Lilly Forbes.

The next big event for the Lincoln local is the New Zealand Commonwealth Games qualifying event in December in Auckland. “I’m not going up there with the objective to qualify for the games, that’s still a little way off,” said Hannah. “Just to be in that environment and see where I need to get to will be amazing.”

Milligan, 21, came into the weekend with the high goal of getting a top-10 finish and it didn’t take him long to exceed that. The highlight of the week was third place in the second race in the Toyota 86 Racing Series. Jack Milligan Milligan got a good getaway in race two to slot into third around the outside of turn one and into second by turn two. He very nearly won the race after diving around the outside of leader and ultimate winner Dylan Gulson. But the move didn’t come off, and cost him second place to Jimmy Vernon. Milligan also set the fastest racing lap time, just one tenth slower than the Toyota 86 lap record. Earlier in the week, Milligan

showed he was on the pace by finishing Friday’s qualifying session with the seventh fastest time. In the opening race, he improved on his starting position, eventually moving into fourth spot. The Bathurst experience saw Milligan take on some of Australia’s up and coming motorsport stars, as well as stalwarts like Leanne Tander and David Brabham.
Milligan was the only New Zealander in the 36-car field of Toyota 86s, one of the main support class for the V8 Supercars. He secured the trip to Bathurst to compete in that round of the Aussie 86 series as part of the rookie title in the New Zealand Toyota 86 Championship. His attention now turns to the NZ Toyota 86 Championship, which starts with the opening round at Pukekohe on November 3.

Spider at home in the house Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us
THE UBIQUITOUS house spider Tegenaria domestica is a European species that has spread worldwide. It was first noticed in Canterbury in 1940s. This 6-12mm hairy brown spider builds dense sheet web in corners of buildings typically with a tubular retreat in one corner. When prey such as fly is
caught in its web, the spider rushes out from its retreat to grab the victim and retires to its retreat to dine. These spiders are often found trapped into empty baths, basins or jars in storage. It is thought that this species can live as long as seven years and produce as many as nine egg sacs usually located near their web.
Lincoln researchers on the end of white bread LINCOLN University researchers say the days of the white slice may be over, as growing health consciousness drives more consumers to buy grain loaves, or avoid bread completely. A survey of shoppers in supermarkets by Lincoln lecturers Sue Trafford and Sharon Forbes found about half thought white bread was unhealthy. Of the shoppers surveyed, 80 per cent perceived multigrain breads to be healthier than other options. It found 23 per cent of shoppers bought white bread, and 77 non-white. That was a turnaround from the numbers almost 40 years ago, when a 1978 survey of shoppers found 89 per cent bought
BUILD 7 A ‘real show home’ open to the public Every Sunday in October (12pm-3pm) the public will have the opportunity to visit a show home with a difference in Lincoln. Unlike the usual show homes people visit when they are in the market to build a new home, this is a real home on show, where builder Jamie Cowan lives with his wife Francesca and their young son. “We wanted to show people the Build7 process first-hand, with a home that we are proud to live in ourselves,” Francesca says. Jamie and Francesca are the Canterbury owners of Build7, a home building company different from most other building companies operating in the New Zealand market. As Francesca explains: “We don’t have set plans that clients choose from. Instead, we sit down with every client and take the design brief from them, and that includes their seven ‘musthaves’. They can also bring in photos of
interiors and styles they like and we can work from those. “We find it a lot easier to design a house from scratch. Everyone has a different idea for their house, and with our method they get exactly what they want. From the briefing we develop a concept pack, which includes renders, a floor plan and elevations, and this is a free service.” Top-quality construction of the client’s home is ensured with Jamie’s 18 years’ building experience – he completed his apprenticeship and early years in Canterbury before spending significant time in Sydney fine-tuning his craft. As the project manager on every build, he is in contact with the client right through the process. Build7 designs and builds homes for all budgets, Francesca says. “We work within the client’s budget, which can range from a Kiwisaver first home build, right through to high-
end properties, where we work with architects if required.” The company has a range of suppliers, coupled with strong trade relationships that come with being a national building company, giving clients an extensive selection of materials and fittings to choose from, while the services of an interior designer are included in the package. Jamie and Francesca’s home is part of Tomorrow’s Show Homes, a programme presenting show homes around New Zealand that are more innovative than standard homes. A four-bedroom home, it was designed it for maximum light, with a contemporary décor and a good connection between indoors and outdoors. Located at 45 Sunline Avenue in the Flemington subdivision in Lincoln, it is open for viewing from 12pm-3pm every Sunday in October.

When you apply the water, you should try to keep it off the foliage of plants if possible.

Ensuring a safe Papanui work place High School As the weather gets warmer and the evenings get longer it is the ideal time to get out of the house and learn something new and meet some new people by taking part in one of the wide range of nightclasses on offer at Papanui High School for Term 4 beginning from Tuesday 24 October. From Art to Yoga and everything in between we are sure regardless of your age or interest you will find something to tempt you. Classes at Papanui High School are held in a warm, friendly relaxed environment and our tutors are supportive and well qualified in their chosen fields. A new course on offer is Creative Candle Making which will teach you to create your own soy container candles and melts, either for yourself or ideal as a gift. Discover more about soy wax, fragrance, wick selection and trouble shooting commom candle making issues. This is a hands on course where you will make 3 full sized scented candles, 6 melts, 5 tea lights and 1 votive. The cost of all materials is included in the course fee. This course is being taught by Jane Alexander and will be held at Papanui High School on Saturday 4 November between 10 am – 4 pm at a cost of $148. Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does
not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.
